This seminar course will cover the adoption of Japanese culture in the USA. The course will begin with a discussion of the influence of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and the West Coast. Did you know that the Hawaiian "Aloha Shirt" was created by Japanese immigrants in Hawaii? Did you know Japanese Zen Buddhism helped shape the Beat Generation in the USA during the 1950s? This course will discuss these examples and other ways the USA adopted Japanese culture in the USA during the 20th century. The course will end by exploring the continued interaction between Japanese and American culture in the 21st century.
